2018 OMESSP Minority Engineering Scholarship Recipients Announced

The recipients of the 2018 Ohio Minority Engineering Student Scholarship Program (OMESSP) sponsored by CT Consultants, Inc. in collaboration with Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and New Visions Group, LLC have been announced.

The purpose of the OMESSP is to foster minority students majoring in civil engineering through mentorship and financial assistance. The 2018 recipients are listed below:

Michael Simpson, University of Dayton                Ed Hogan – $5,000
Asha Brown, University of Akron                          OMESSP – $2,500
Romell Bolden, University of Akron                      OMESSP – $2,500

The Ohio Minority Engineering Student Scholarship Program offers four $2,500 scholarships on an annual basis to students enrolled in an accredited Ohio college or University civil engineering program. The Ed Hogan Scholarship is a $5,000 scholarship established in 2017. Since the programs establishment 2008, 29 scholarships have been awarded to undergraduate students from seven Ohio colleges and universities totaling $77,500.

The program is open to African American freshman and upperclassmen (not graduate students). To be eligible for the OMESSP or the Ed Hogan scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Black/African descent student enrolled in an accredited Ohio college or university
  • Students must be declared as an engineering major and focus on civil engineering. Architecture and planning fields are also eligible for the Hogan Memorial Scholarship
  • Maintain reasonable standard of conduct, as defined by the Ohio Minority Student Scholarship Program selection committee, expected of scholarship students
