Chagrin Falls, OH
The Chagrin Falls downtown district has long been recognized as being quaint and charming, with rich historic and natural beauty, scenic waterfalls visible from Main Street, and many unique shops and restaurants. Community leaders and merchants however, were increasingly concerned about the unattractive and deteriorated condition of its public street corridors, parking and gathering areas. CT Consultants was engaged by the village to work with a steering committee comprised of community leaders, merchants and residents to prepare the master plan, financing plan, site design and engineering drawings for downtown street corridor capital improvements and streetscape enhancements.
According to Lydia Champlin who served as Mayor during the project, “The goal of the project was to address the deterioration while also preserving and enhancing the historic 19th century mill-town character of downtown. The key to our success was selecting an experienced firm and forming a strong public-private partnership between village council, merchants and residents, as demonstrated by voter-approval of a village bond issue for the project and our obtaining grant funding from a variety of sources outside the village.”
Improvements and enhancements designed and installed as part of the downtown streets project included new concrete sidewalks with rustic “weather-beaten” finish, handicap accessible ramps, historic-style decorative streetlight and traffic signal poles, water lines, storm drainage including filtration units to protect Chagrin River water quality, curbs and parking, undergrounding of all overhead wires, landscaping and furnishings. Additionally, the project renovated Riverside Park in the downtown district with new stone paving, brick walls, landscaping, lighting and furnishings.
