Honda Wetland Education Center at Glacier Ridge

Union County, Ohio

Glacier Ridge Metro Park is 970-acres of fallow farms and rolling woodlands stretching just north of Dublin, Ohio into southeastern Union County.  The Honda Wetland Education Center project at Glacier Ridge provides the public the opportunity to observe and interpret an active wetland. Funding was provided through a partnership between Metro Parks and the Honda Motor Company.

Metro Parks restored approximately 180-acres of wetlands at Glacier Ridge and identified a 12-acre site on which to construct an education area. Concepts, design and documentation were provided for the project.

A historic barn, serving not only as an orientation building, but also the focal point was originally slated for demolition, but instead was dismantled and relocated to Glacier Ridge, preserving its history for future generations. A two-story observation tower allows the visitor to view the 800 -foot boardwalk which winds throughout the wetlands, and eventually links to existing trail systems. The central wetlands, which also serve as the site’s stormwater detention area provides many wildlife habitat and educational opportunities. Parking and access was provided convenient to the visitor center.

Highlights of the Honda Wetland Education Center Include:

    • A focus on teaching/interpreting a wetland environment
    • A self-supporting facility where both water supply and wastewater treatment are provided on-site
    • A theme-based design to facilitate observation of an active wetland area
    • Incorporation of an old barn structure which enhanced the interpretation potential offered by the facility
    • A storm water retention area within the site to filter parking lot runoff and encourage groundwater recharge before reaching the wetland.
    • A dramatic observation tower which includes a fully accessible platform cantilevering the wetland edge
