ACEC of Ohio Awards CT Consultants with 2013 Engineering Excellence Awards

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Ohio has awarded CT Consultants two separate awards for the 2013 Engineering Excellence Awards Competition.

CT Consultants received an Honor Award for the design of the Carrollton Wastewater  Treatment Plant Expansion for the Village of Carrollton, Ohio and a second Honor Award for the West Bridge Street Bridge Replacement over the Rocky River completed for the Cuyahoga County Department of Public works in the City of Berea, Ohio.

CT Consultants provided general planning, design and construction administration for the $8 million expansion of the Village of Carrollton’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.  The Village selected a state of the art membrane bioreactor (MBR) process to expand the biological process from its average daily flow capacity of 0.5 MGD to 0.75 MGD and to accommodate past and presently identified increased loadings.  While the lifecycle cost of the MBR is marginally higher, there were several benefits which included: site preservation for other plant improvements; cleaner effluent which has an environmentally beneficial potential for reuse, and resistance to future increased discharge limits; a feasible treatment alternative for storm water infiltration and inflow (I/I) treatment which exceeds the plant’s normal treatment capacity and flow equalization capacity; and minimizing plant staffing.

The design of the $1.3 million West Bridge Street Bridge Replacement by CT Consultants consists of an out-of-the-ordinary geometry, single-span bridge with an average 76 ft. span.  The Cuyahoga County Engineer and the Ohio Public Works Commission provided funding for this unique replacement bridge.  A superstructure consisting of 13 unequal lengths of concrete I-girders was designed in order to limit the differential deflections that the deck will experience during its lifespan. Each of the thirteen (13) I-girder’s length varied due to the unusual abutment layout consisting of five (5) different skews that had to be incorporated into the design to receive the new superstructure in order to limit construction costs.
